How I spend this ordinary day in Christ is how I will spend my Christian life.” Warren, an Anglican priest, writes: “If I am to spend my whole life being transformed by the good news of Jesus, I must learn how grand, sweeping truths - doctrine, theology, ecclesiology, Christology - rub against the texture of an average day. In her book, Liturgy of the Ordinary: Sacred Practices in Everyday Life (2016, InterVarsity Press), Tish Harrison Warren, releases the ancient word from its traditional roots and refurbishes the idea of the liturgy into a heartfelt pursuit of integrating Christ into daily activities. It has a backstory that includes the Protestant Reformation which saw the implementation of many changes in the church, including a massive revision of the liturgy. The word liturgy also rings of church history. What comes to your mind when you read the word liturgy? The term unquestionably carries with it images of clerical vestments, brightly burning candles in sacred spaces, repeated prayers, and the fragrance of incense.

Here is a quick description and cover image of book Full Frontal Feminism written by Jessica Valenti which was published in April 17, 2007. Brief Summary of Book: Full Frontal Feminism by Jessica Valenti Even when someone wore a whale mask or was divorced from a famous accordion player, they tended to run together for me because I didn’t really know what anyone wanted. Most of them felt either cardboard or wacky or disgusting, or sometimes all three. It’s still wacky, but at least all the various plotlines eventually connect.Ĭons: I didn’t like any of the characters. They’re all strung together in ways that eventually make sense. It involves beets, the god Pan, a Pagan king, perfumers and a cult of people trying to find immortality. They got tiresome after a while, but they were impressive.Īlso, the story itself is wacky and whimsical and weird. A woman wears a smile you could mail a letter in. Flames dart from the boughs of a funeral pyre like finches from hell. The weather in New Orleans is like an obscene phone call from nature. I thought I was good at analogies, but Robbins really goes to extremes. Pros: The writing on a sentence-by-sentence level is full of some of the most imaginative analogies I’d read anywhere. I did not enjoy it, though I can admire some of the skill that went into it. This book is unlike any other I have read. This author is unlike any other I have read. I really love this friend and wanted to know what she loved about this book if not for her, I would have quit many times. I read this book because my friend told me about it, saying it was her favorite book while referencing her beet tattoo. It means After Atlas can be read as a standalone, for one thing. Of course, even if this isn’t the direct sequel you’d hoped for, there’s still plenty of good news. There are mentions to previous events, but at best the link between the two novels are tenuous, with After Atlas following a new protagonist, featuring a completely new scenario in a new setting, and even the story’s tone and style are completely different. If you were like me and were confused by the ending of the first book, I’m afraid you’ll not find many answers here. While After Atlas takes place in the same cosmos as Planetfall, it is more accurate to call it a companion novel than a true sequel. This does not affect the contents of my review and all opinions are my own. I received a review copy from the publisher.
